Phase 1 to Last at Least One More Week, Fall School Plans Coming Tuesday

Gov. Ralph Northam expects Virginia to move into Phase 2 of the state's business reopening plan on Friday, June 5.

Most of Virginia has been in a limited Phase 1 for the past two weeks which allows retail stores to operate at 50% capacity, restaurants to offer outdoor seating at 50% capacity, and personal care salons to reopen with appointments and social distancing and sanitizing requirements.

Parts of Northern Virginia, the City of Richmond and Accomack County on the Eastern Shore delayed their entry into Phase 1 but will start up tomorrow, Friday, May 29.

Northam says Virginia's trends -- increased testing, stable hospitalization numbers and a downward trend in the percent of positive cases -- are good.

An education task force has been working on guidelines and procedures to reopen schools in the fall and Northam says there will be an announcement about this on Tuesday, June 2.

The Governor announced that 39 CVS locations around the state will offer testing with self-swab kits. This will include locations in Lynchburg, Roanoke and Radford.

Virginia will require all people over the age of 10 entering indoor public places to wear masks starting Friday. Northam encourages people to follow the requirement but says that businesses will not have to enforce the rule beyond just asking the customer to wear a mask or offering one. Any complaints about businesses not adhering to the requirement would be handled by the Virginia Department of Health.

All public beaches in Virginia will be allowed to open starting tomorrow with social distancing and sanitation requirements.

NASCAR will be allowed to run single day events with no spectators. A race is scheduled for June 10th in Martinsville.

The Governor announced that Microsoft will be investing $64 million in a new software development hub in Reston which will bring 1,500 new jobs.

All high school and college graduates will be honored Friday at 5:00 pm in a program called "Virginia Graduates Together" to be aired on PBS stations across the state as well as on YouTube and Facebook live.
