Neighbor Files Complaint About Christmas Lights Display in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - Decorating for Christmas has been a tradition for the Brown family in Lynchburg for the past 14 years.

"Everybody looks forward to me doing it," Jason Brown, the homeowner, said.

However, not all neighbors of the Brown family feel the same way about the extravagant holiday decorations.

Last Wednesday, Brown received a letter from an attorney, outlining a complaint from his across-the-street neighbor. No one named the neighbor, but the neighbor's attorney, Joseph R. Sanzone, says the demand document states that the light display is "impairing comfort, convenience and enjoyment."

In response to the demand letter, Brown has agreed to only operate the display from dusk to 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 10 p.m. on weekends.

Update from the homeowner Jason Brown:

"Thanks in no small part to the over 7200 people that have signed, it would appear that for the time being my neighbor has decided to not proceed further with his claims in court. Yesterday we received a note from his attorney indicating to some degree that while the level of community support was touching, they still felt like his private rights were being infringed upon, but that they would move forward from here and asked us to be mindful of people that come by and watch and ask them as much as possible to keep their radios down and be considerate, which we have always done. SO THANK YOU! to the many who signed and the offers of support."
