New Laws Taking Effect in Virginia in 2022

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — With a new year comes new laws. Here's a look at some of the new laws taking effect in the Commonwealth in 2022.

Virginia minimum wage increases from $9.50 per hour to $11 per hour. The minimum wage in Virginia is set to increase each year until it reaches $15 an hour in 2026.

Minimum insurance coverage for vehicles in Virginia is set to increase on Jan. 1. Drivers will now need minimum coverage of $30,000 for injury or death of one person and $60,000 for injury or death of two or more persons.

The city of Roanoke will begin implementing a $0.05 tax on disposable plastic bags provided at grocery stores, convenience stores and drugstores within city limits.
