A Wednesday morning update from the U.S. Forest Service shows that the Matt's Creek Fire in northern Bedford County is now covering 1,400 acres and is still not contained.

The fire has rapidly spread since the original 150-acre estimate on Tuesday morning.

Officials said they have approximately 80 firefighters and support staff, including four fire crews and three helicopters, on the scene.

The fire has not posed a threat so far to any residents; however, the billowing smoke is affecting people in the area.

The Boonsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company said to remain indoors as much as possible if you have breathing difficulties, but do not call emergency dispatch unless you see active fire.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the entire fire is on National Forest lands and there are currently no structures threatened.
