American Idol judge and country singer Keith Urban phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday and revealed that in addition to mentoring the final four girls, he’s been working on his own music!
“We’re going to have a new album out,” he said. ”I’m actually calling you from the studio … I’m working on my record as of today so…certainly a new song [will be out] in the next couple of months … [We're] probably about three quarters way through. We’ve got a couple more months of recording but we should have a single out in the next couple of months while we finish up the rest of the record.”
Keith, who has extended his Light the Fuse 2013 tour dates, began working on his new album ”last year and then I’ve threaded it through either being on the set of Idol or in the studio or overseas when my wife’s been shooting a film. So I’ve kind of been all over the place.”
What influenced Keith’s new music?
“Everything,” he admitted. “Sounds and grooves and energy. I think this record has a particular energy to it that I’ve never captured on a record before. So, I’m really looking forward to these songs live, and I think that’s another thing that I’m looking forward to playing live is the songs off the record which you know we’re probably going to be playing songs off the album live in concert before the record even comes out.”
As for the final four girls remaining on American Idol, Keith jokes: ”The only thing I feel sure about is a girl is going to win.”
When it comes to the finale, “it’s like a Super Bowl team…it’s just going to come down to the right performance of the night.”
With tonight’s performances being “One Hit Wonders” and singer’s choice tonight, Keith expects the four — Kree, Candice, Amber, and Angie — to shine as always.
“We’ve already seen I think some of these singers have really stepped up to the plate because they know how to choose the right song and they choose the right song because they know who they are as an artist and I think that’s what this thing is coming down to … not just great singers because let’s face it all four of these girls are incredible singers and they’re all slightly different … so whats going to make one step out more than another one? I think a sense of who they are as an artist and a clarity about them is what i think were going to see tonight.”
Also at Idol tonight: Keith’s now-infamous snacks! ”They just get brought to the table,” he insisted. “I said we should change it up so they brought like this mix of popcorn, cranberries and walnuts last week and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s good.’ So I ate those, but then I realized the popcorn was sticking all in my teeth and we’re on the cameras so I ditched those and am going back to the chocolate almonds.”
